The Orlando area was occupied long before European settlement by Native American tribes such as the Seminole Indians. Evidence exists to indicate that the early Native American tribes were in the Florida region for thousands of years before the first European contact was made. The Spanish are believed to be the first inhabitants of the Florida region, having arrived in the late 16th century. Ponce de Leon claims the distinction of being the first European explorer to visit the region, although there is controversy as to whether or not previous explorers may have been there first.

The Spanish quickly moved to secure their claim over the Florida region by settling St. Augustine in the region. The French and Spanish fought over the entire region, but the Spanish eventually succeeded in driving their French rivals out of the area entirely. Under the control of the Spanish Empire, Jesuit missionaries built several outposts throughout the Florida area, attempting convert the local Indians. The Spanish also invited escaped slaves to live in freedom under their territorial jurisdiction.

After the Seminole Wars and the Treaty of Adams-Onis, the United States took control of the entire Florida region. Orlando is said to have been founded in 1837, with its name coming from a soldier that fell during the Seminole Wars. Orlando would remain a quiet and unassuming town for many years. The Civil War and the subsequent blockade of the state’s ports brought hard times to Orlando. The town would remain sparsely populated until after the Civil War, when it would experience a sharp increase in population.

The citrus industry was largely responsible for the boom in Orlando’s population. After the Civil War, many moved to Florida to take part in the citrus industry. During the 1920s, Orlando continued to grow, and took on a booming tourism industry that was flourishing at the time. Although the Great Depression slowed economic growth in the area, it did not stop the town from being revitalized later on.

Along with the rest of the country, Orlando experienced a major shift in its fortunes with the arrival of World War II. Industry arrived in the area, and the job market began to boom during this time. The permanent presence of the Air Force and Army after the war continued the economic growth that began during that time. Perhaps most famously, however, Orlando was chosen as the site of the new Disneyworld. This alone vaulted Orlando to the world stage, and millions now visit the city every year.
